Fellow CFCL Citizens!
The Banquet wrapping up the 2008 CFCL Season is complete. Ownership representing the Copperfields, Rebels, Revenge, Bulls and Hots were in attendance to partake of delectable sausage pizza and various brews. Per usual David handled the awards ceremony with aplomb. As it turns out the Red Hots were this year's version of Slumdog Millionaire, garnering nearly every award including the prestigious Paul Mahlan Award and the GM of the Year Award. The only trophy he avoided taking home (other than the Championship) was The Nick Esasky Award - won by the Kenndoza Line for their sterling pickup of Andruw Jones.
Once the awards were handed out and most of the pizza was gone, we turned to league business. The only topic that made the table was trading. After reviewing why this became an issue and briefly referencing all the suggestions that have been posted to the CFCL Forum Board, it was generally decided that this still is a Gentlemen's League and therefore we shouldn't want to or have to legislate how a team trades. What was agreed upon was that each owner should be reminded that the draft is first and foremost the way a team will be successful and trades should supplement that, not necessarily make up for a poor draft.
Throughout the season the Commissioner's office and/or the Executive Committee will provide reminders that should suffice in handling the issues from the past couple of years.
A good time was had by all. Pitchers and catchers report in 17 days!

Winter Meetings Preview
This has apparently been around a while, but it's the first time I've seen it. My brother Paul passed it on to me... thanks Paul!

Winter Waiver 2009 - Round 3
And thus the Winter Waivers for 2009 has officially come to a close. No claims were made (what nobody wants Fukudome at the delicious price of .29?) so the Winter Waivers is over.
----
Keep in mind that the trade season is open. All trades need to be reported to Rich (demreb@sbcglobal.net) to be official.
----
We are waiting on one final owner to vote by tomorrow on whether the team fees will remain at $105 or be raised to $120.
----
The Executive Committee will soon have an announcement on how the CFCL is going to handle the administrative transition away from Head Copperfield.
----
REMINDER - The CFCL Banquet has been scheduled for Saturday, January 24th at 6:30 at the Home Run Inn on 75th, just east of I-355.
----
Some of you have inquired as to the Draft Day date. That's still being worked out. We're hoping to have it finalized by early February. I know some of you need to make travel arrangements and others need to make alternate work plans. Sorry for the delay - we'll have an answer soon.
----
That's all the news that's fit to print. Stay warm! This 10 below weather can't last much longer!

Happy New Year!
Ok, par for the course lately, these New Year's greetings are a tad late as you'll have noticed that the business of the New Year has already begun with Winter Waivers. But nonetheless, welcome to the CFCL 2009!
As far as the CFCL goes 2009 will be a "new year" indeed, as many changes are afoot in the league, mostly from an administrative standpoint.
The biggest change, which has already gone into effect, is that I'll be taking more of a backseat when it comes to the day-to-day operations of the league. My "mid-career crisis", "fantasy nervous breakdown", or whatever you want to call it had me on the brink of complete retirement from the hobby. Thanks to Rich, however, I'll be on hiatus -- though as this posting shows, I'm not leaving the Front Office altogether. As Rich and I started to work on transition plans, we discovered there were some things that I'd still need to control -- mostly related to web publishing, etc (such as the Home Town Discount info Rich mentioned earlier).
As Rich also recently noted, we've relocated the Excel roster sheets to a new home, the the way you access them will be exactly the same -- via the link over on the right, or in the Download Center. The new home simply allows Rich to update and publish them himself without involving me as a middle man.
With my mostly-retirement, there will be some things that fall by the wayside, most notably the NL Spring Training Rosters and therefore the Draft Pool Lists on Draft Day. At this point I do not plan on compiling the Spring Training rosters and tracking them up to Opening Day. The Executive Commitee (congrats to Michael and Matt, by the way) will be determining what that means in terms of bidding and posiitonal eligibility for Draft Day and announce that as we near D-Day.
One thing I'll still be responsible for is renewing our membership with CBS Sportsline. You may have recieved an e-mail from Sportsline about this recently. What the e-mail didn't tell you is that they're increasing the renewal fee by $20 per league this year (that's after the $30 earlybird fee is applied). That, combined with the reduction in the number of teams this year, means that we may need to take a look at restructuring our fees and/or prize pool. Watch for more info on this soon. Along with that, I may be asking for fees to be paid sooner rather than later so my credit card doesn't have to bear the full brunt of the Sportsline renewal. Stay tuned...

Winter Waiver 2009 - Round 2
Well that sure cooled things down. In Round 1 there were 19 claims. In Round 2 only five claims were filed. Amazingly none of the 24 claims were made by Moore Better, apparently choosing to build via the draft than by waivers.
Here are the results for Round 2
Candy Colored Clowns claim Casey Blake .24W (Tim Hudson .05W)
Dem Rebels claim Matt Latos .02M (Pat Burrell .33W)
Dem Rebels claim Casey Weathers .02M (Kosuke Fukudome .29W)

Winter Reading
In case you haven't ventured to the Monroe Doctrine recently, there are three posts since the end of the season. Can't promise you that it's as entertaining as the new MLB channel, but if you don't want to watch the 2008 Home Run Derby for the 12th time, it might provide you a nice diversion.
FUN WITH STATISTICS
A while ago I posted something about Greg Maddux retiring and that he was one of only two pitchers to record more than 3000 strikeouts and less than 1000 walks. Then I listened to the opening ceremonies of the Winter Classic between the Blackhawks and Red Wings. They were introducing the dignitaries attending and got to Fergie Jenkins. The PA guy said that Jenkins was one of THREE pitchers with that accomplishment.
So off I ran to baseball-reference.com to see who was right. It appears that as of right now there are FIVE!!! pitchers that qualify. Of course, that could change since three of the pitchers are still active. Here is the list.
Fergie Jenkins - 3192 strikeouts; 997 walks
Greg Maddux - 3371 strikeouts; 999 walks
John Smoltz - 3011 strikeouts; 992 walks (since Smoltz just signed with Boston for as many as two years, he could easily fall of this list); but here's where it gets amazing ----
Curt Schilling - 3116 strikeouts; 711 walks
Pedro Martinez - 3117 strikeouts; 752 walks
Given the health and age of Schilling and Martinez, they are virtual locks to stay on the list when they retire - and by a long shot. Pedro I can understand, but I never thought Schilling was all that and a bag of chips. He's better than I thought. I guess his penchant for the camera lens and the focus on a bloody sock caused some distraction.

Round 2 Waiver Claims are due to Rich (demreb@sbcglobal.net) by Sunday, January 11th at 3pm. Same rules apply, claim one – waive one.
Since the Round One of Winter Waivers is complete - - - The Trading Season is now open! You may trade from now until Roster Freeze Day.
Housekeeping:
With a unanimous voice the CFCL has voted (10-0) to play 2009 with ten teams and 40 roster slots (23 active/17 reserved). Discussion will take place during the season on whether to continue with that structure for 2010 and beyond or add teams or increase roster size.
On the CFCL Home Website (David’s Blog) the link for Home Town Discounts has been updated.
On that same website the link for the Rosters has been updated through the First Round of Winter Waivers. After the second round of waiver is complete the two Ownerless Teams will be removed. You have one more chance to see the names of the players from those teams that have been released into the Free Agent Pool and will be available on Draft Day.
Thank you to all who have responded for the Banquet. We will have the Banquet on Saturday, January 24th at 6pm. The location is Home Run Inn on 75th street just east of I-355. See you there!
