Winter Waiver 2011

The cuts are in. Below are the players you have to choose from. I strongly, strongly encourage all of you to visit the Constitution and remind yourself of the rules of Winter Waivers. Here are a couple of high points.

• The Trade Season opens at the completion of the First Round
• The First Round picks must be submitted by 3pm, Thursday, January 6th (no exceptions - if you forget to submit your picks, you miss the round).
• For every Waiver Claim you make you MUST WAIVE a player (claim three, waive three). IT DOES NOT MATTER THE SIZE OF YOUR ROSTER.
• You may claim players in the AL from the list below. If they stay in the AL by Roster Freeze Day they will be released.
• You MAY NOT waive a player on a Long Term Contract

Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen

I want to start by thanking Rich for devoting an entire Monroe Doctrine to my retirement from the ownership ranks of the CFCL. Wow, if I had known I’d receive a tribute like that, I would have bowed out a long time ago – I haven’t had that many nice things said about me since … well, ever, really. Before I get all Sally Field on everyone, a couple other reactions to Rich’s piece:

• 9900 days? Really? Geez, if I had known we were that close to 10,000, I might have played another year (or at least held off on announcing my retirement until next February). “10,000 Days of Fantasy” would have made a great title for my memoirs…
• It’s phrases like “vile, despicable scum” that make the CFCL so special. Now that phrase probably means nothing to anyone other than Rich and I (and maybe The Professor) since it harkens way back to the earliest days of the league, but it’s something that’s entered our permanent vocabulary, ready to be broken out at anytime, but also reserved for very special uses. CFCL lore is littered with similar phrases and memories.
• Good god, I had forgotten that I used to actually type out the standings on my mom’s old manual typewriter – it wasn’t even an electric! I don’t know what’s more amazing: that I actually had the time to do that each week, or that I was such a loser/geek that that’s how I chose to spend the time I did have.

Pretty much everything Rich wrote is true, though I wouldn’t say it exactly tells the full story, because I had plenty of help all along the way, from Bob Monroe (who, as the CFCL’s original “Computer Mole-Man”, was the first to compile Draft Day lists and assisted with early computerization of the stat process, up to Michal C. and Matt G. (who took on some of my Front Office responsibilities over the past couple years.

And of course, there’d be no CFCL without Rich. All I did was show him a book – he’s the one who actually said, “hey, we should do this!” The league has been a true partnership from the very beginning, and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner – y’all are in good hands, as you’ve seen for the past couple years.

Speaking of which, I also want to thank Rich for giving me those. As I’m sure you’ll all recall, I had originally decided to retire before the 2009 season, but it was Rich who suggested I step back on my League Office duties and focus just on the team management aspect. It did give me one last shot at a Championship in 2009, but I could have seen the writing on the wall when I couldn’t even show up at the right damn place for Draft Day in 2010.

Thanks to all of those 39 different CFCL owners who partook in the journey over the years – many of whom I did not know before the CFCL, but who I still call friends, and especially to the current group of 9. And thanks to Rich for the Monroe Doctrine tribute, the chance to play a couple more season, 27+ years of incredible experiences and indescribable fun, and for the many years of friendship still to come.

Hometown Discount 2010

The Sportsline standings have finally settled and we now know each teams HTD for next year's draft. One thing I noticed was that Dem Rebels had four holds on Sunday which allowed them to pass the Red Hots by one S/H which allowed them to amass 30 points which allowed them to capture 50% of the maximum budget. If you noticed similar movement the last day or weekend of the season I encourage you to post a comment.

Ruffins Capture Third Crown

The CFCL 2010 season is complete and the Ruffins pulled away for their third title. Only the Copperfields have won more championships than the Ruffins. Congratulations to The Professor!

A Dubious End

The 2010 CFCL Free Agent Season came to an end with an incomplete bid. The DoorMatts bid the final .05 of their FAAB on Mark Melancon. For good measure the 'Matts also submitted three back up bids. The only problem was they didn't designate anyone to be released which would have left them with 41 players on their roster. Since there was no player designated for release, the bid is incompete/illegal and therefore unaccepted.

I'm sure the 'Matts management hope that Melancon doesn't provide ten points of standing production this week.

I would also like to take this time to publicly thank David's brother, Paul Mahlan, for his help throughout the season. Each Sunday Paul would take time away from his activities to call me with a new password to the Free Agent Mailbox thus ensuring the integrity of the Free Agent Bidding Process. Thank you Paul!

Banquet and End of the Year Updates

Fellow Owners, first of all thank you for your responses for banquet availability and award nominees. From those of you that have responded (Kenn and Professor, whatup? To good to provide us with your banquet availability?) it looks like Sundays have the least conflict (aside from Grage needing to follow his seventeen fantasy football teams). That being said, let's narrow it down a bit. Please e-mail me or click on the comment section below to register your vote.

2) October 24th

October 3rd may be too fast a turn around to get the ballots out and collected. I have a late soccer game to attend on the 17th (which doesn't actually mean we couldn't have it then, I just would be late or lacking in attendance) and the 31st is Halloween so those of us with kids will be busy raking in tons of goodies.

Let's assume something in the late afternoon/early evening since Monday is a workday for most of us. We'll plan on something in the 4-5pm range at the latest tradition in CFCL Banquet, Home Run Inn on 75th in Downers Grove.
