K Wood Day Reminder

As you rush to make your last minute roster changes for the weekend, remember that today (May 6th) is K Wood Day.  The anniversary of Kerry Wood striking out 20 Houston Astros back in 1998 (the game Owner Emeritus David Mahlan ALMOST saw).

Quick reminder on the rules.  The team that records the most strikeouts (not by their hitters - effectively leaving Dem Rebels out of the running) by the pitchers on their ACTIVE roster will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to MLB.com.

Results will be posted later tonight or tomorrow morning.  Good luck!

K-Wood Day

Ahem, hmmm, wow, hoo-boy.  Ten CFCL teams fielding at least nine pitchers and not one could outperform Kerry Wood from 18 years ago.  But we still have a winner.  Congratulations to the Graging Bulls, eking out a one strikeout win over the Beatniks.  A $25 mlb.com gift card is on its way.

Kerry Wood - 20

May 6th is K-Wood Day

A week from today is our first Special Day.  In honor of Kerry Wood striking out 20 Houston Astros ("HERE COMES THE HOOK!" said a very understated Chip Carey), back in 1998, the CFCL hands out one of two mlb.com gift cards.

On May 6th, the CFCL whose ACTIVE pitching staff records the most strikeouts will win a $25 gift card to mlb.com

The Swing wins K-Wood Day!

We have reached the first Special Day of the year.  K-Wood Day, honoring Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout performance against the Houston Astros, celebrates the CFCL team that had the most strikeouts from their active roster.  And what a pathetic collective performance it was.  Not one TEAM could outperform Kerry's INDIVIDUAL performance 16 years ago.  But The Swing came close, notching 17 strikeouts to take home the prize.  They will be receiving a e-gift card from mlb.com in their InBox soon.

Interestingly, the Bulls had a chance to win.  Strategically they benched Edwin Jackson while he pitched against the White Sox.  Normally a good move, except that Jackson came through with a Quality Start . . . and nine strikeouts, all on reserve.  The nine strikeouts would have given the Bulls enough to overtake The Swing.

Here are the results of all the teams compared to Kerry Wood.

KERRY WOOD - 20
The Swing - 17
Twin Killers - 15
Kenndoza Line - 10
Graging Bulls - 10
Dem Rebels - 9
Beatnicks - 7
Revenge - 3
Clowns - 2
DoorMatts - 0
Ruffins - 0

Wood had more strikeouts on May 6th, 1998 than the Beatnicks, Revenge, Clowns, DoorMatts and Ruffins did last night combined

K-Wood Winner 2013

Congratulations to the DoorMatts for winning K-Wood Day.  Riding the arm of Madison Bumgarner (seven strikeouts) and his bullpen (three strikeouts), the DoorMatts were the only team to reach double digits.

The Danger (Arroyo - 7 strikeouts), Killers (Maholm - 6 strikeouts) and Beatniks (Lee - 6 strikeouts) tried to make a game of it, but it was the bullpens that proved to be the difference.  The DoorMatts had help from theirs and the Danger, Killers and Beatniks didn't.

A $25 gift card to mlb.com is on its way to the DoorMatts e-mail box.

K Wood Winner

Congratulations to the Revenge for winning this year's K Wood Day! The Revenge staged a come from behind victory on the right arm of Matt Cain to over take the Clowns. The Revenge posted 22 Ks, three more than the 19 registered by the Clowns. The Ruffins finished a distant third and were the only other team with double digit strike outs, amassing thirteen. A $25 gift card to mlb.com is on the way to the Revenge e-mailbox.

K Wood Day

May 6th is K Wood 2012. Since it's on a Sunday there should be strong competition for the coveted $25 gift card. As a reminder, the team with the highest total of strikeouts recorded by their ACTIVE pitching staff will garner the prize. Last year the Red Hots won with 25 Ks (16 by Cliff Lee alone). Neither the Hots nor Lee are around for this year's go at it so the door is wide open. Good luck!

K-Wood Winner

There was stiff competition to win the first MLB giftcard via K-Wood Day. The DoorMatts missed out by a day with Halladay and Josh Johnson pitching on the 5th. The Clowns tried to channel K Wood karma by having the award's namesake active, lo Kerry logged only one strikeout, just nineteen fewer than he did thirteen years ago.

The Ruffins logged 17 Ks in 10 innings. The Revenge nabbed 20 strikeouts, falling just short. But ultimately the Red Hots nabbed the $25 prize with a total of 25 Ks, riding the coattails of Cliff Lee's 16 strikeouts.

Congratulations to Bob! Your mlb.com gift card is on its way to your e-mailbox.
