Congratulations, Stones!

Steve's Stones capped off a commanding 2nd half performance by winning the second championship in franchise history, joining David's Copperfields, Dem Rebels, David's Ruffins, and Eric's Lambchops as the only two-time league champs.

At the season's halfway point, the Stones held a slim 1.5 point lead, only recently having moved into the top spot. A week later, the lead had grown to 12.5 points, and for the rest of the season never fell below 8.5 points. The Stone's final 12.5 point margin of victory was the third highest ever, and marked just the 4th time in the CFCL's 25-year history that the Champion finished with a double-digit lead over the second place team.

Speaking of the second place team, back when the Stones were beginning their second half surge, Mo's Red Hots sat in 8th place. However, while teams above them in the standings turned toward next year and started dumping, the Red Hots went to work on their current squad, adding talent via trades and free agent acquisitions, and began a surge of their own. Over the next five periods they picked up 20 points and injected themselves into the pennant race. They fell short in the end, but deserve kudos for their attempt.

Congrats to the Stones, nice try to the Hots, and thanks to everyone else for taking part in the CFCL's 25th season.

September Happenings

September 1 is just a week away, and reaching that date means two things:

  1. CFCL active rosters can expand by one player. You can activate a player from your Reserve List effective next Monday (happily, this year Sept. 1 corresponds to a regular transaction date) or on any Friday or Monday through the rest of the season. The extra player can also be a free agent acquired during the regular Sunday FAAB bidding, but remember that free agents acquired on or after September 1 receive an S contract (unless the bid is .25 or more). Players with S contracts are automatically released at the end of the season, but are not eligible for Home Town Discounts next year.
  2. In order to accomodate the extra player, the salary cap increases by .10 to 3.60.

Keep in mind that it's the ACTIVE ROSTER only that expands on September 1 - your full roster can still only be 40 players total. This means that if you activate a 24th player for September Roster Expansion, you are limited to 16 players on your Reserve List. Keep this in mind when you bid on free agents - don't assume you have an extra roster spot to play with and can acquire a player without releasing someone to make room.

FAAB Processing Change

I mentioned about a month ago that Eric was going to be on hiatus as Officer of FAAB while he relocated to Memphis and that his former Assistant GM, Paul Mahlan, would be forwarding the bids from the FAAB e-mail address to me each week.

Now that I've expended my FAAB for the season, we're able to cut out the middle man and I'll be accessing the bids directly each week -- you should still send them to the cfcl_faab@live.com address.

Just wanted to be above board so everyone is aware of how things will be working behind the scenes.

Quiet Trade Deadline

Today's Noon deadline for CFCL trades passed fairly quietly compared with 2007, when there were five deadline day deals. Attention now turns to the 3:00 PM Central time deadline for the Interleague Free Agent Bidding Day auction.

Only two trades were completed at the trade deadline, both of them involving Mo's Red Hots:
Interestingly, the Red Hots are the only team that does not have anything remaining in their Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB), so perhaps they saw trades as the only way to improve their team while the other contenders are eyeing Manny Ramirez, Casey Kotchman, and the rest of the incoming free agents.

Red Hots Deal Again as Bulls Wave White Flag

In a stunning turn of events, the second-place Graging Bulls have apparently shifted focus toward 2009.

In a trade completed this morning, the Bulls send outfielder Xavier Nady (.09-10+), second baseman Orlando Hudson (.12-08), and reliever Saul Rivera (.05-10+) to Mo's Red Hots for outfielder Ryan Ludwick (.01-10+), reliever Jeff Samardjzia (.05-10+), and the Red Hot's 7th round Rotation Draft pick in 2009.

The trade is a study in contrasts, with the Red Hots going all out for this year, continuing a climb that has taken them from 9th place and 26 points out of first 5 periods ago to 5th place and only 9 points back. Meanwhile, despite starting the day only 5.5 points out of first place, the Bulls apparently feel they cannot make up the ground in the remaining two months. It marks the second time in 5 years the Bulls have gone into rebuilding mode while first place, and certainly a money spot, were within their reach.

Hots Improve Bullpen in Deal with Copperfields

Mo's Red Hots, who have been one of the more active teams leading up to the trade deadline, today completed their third trade in the last couple weeks.

In their latest deal, they acquired relievers Jonathon Broxton (.05-08) and Brian Shouse (.01-10+) from the Copperfields. In return, they sent bargain-priced pitchers Paul Maholm (.01-09+) and Hong-Chih Kuo (.01-10+) to the Coppers.

FAAB Balances - July 31, 2008

In preparation for IFAB Day, here are the current FAAB balances for each CFCL team as they're recorded in the official league records. If you feel you have a different amount available to spend, contact me ASAP so we can investigate.

As a reminder, FAAB balances for each team always appear on the Excel roster sheet that is available in the Download Center of the CFCL Internet Headquarters. In addition to viewing the amount left to spend, you can hover your cursor over the amount and a pop-up window will display a list of the free agents you've acquired during the season to day and the amount you paid for each.

So, without further ado, here's what each team we have to work with on Friday:
  • Morkertzuma's Revenge - .28
  • David's Copperfields - .39
  • Moore Better - .67
  • DoorMatts - .20
  • Dem Rebels - .35
  • Graging Bulls - .30
  • Nick's Picts - .48
  • David's Ruffins - .42
  • Candy Colored Clowns - .24
  • Mo's Red Hots - .00
  • Kenndoza Line - .13
  • Steve's Stones - .50

Remember, IFAB Day bids must be received by 3:00 PM Central time on Friday August 1.

Trade Deadline and IFAB Day

The CFCL mid-season trade deadline is about a week and a half away.

All trades and associated moves to make rosters legal must be reported by Noon Central time on Friday August 1.

August 1 is also Interleague Free Agent Bidding (IFAB) Day. The Major League trading deadline in July 31, and typically there is quite a bit of activity in the days prior to that, with a number of players being added to the CFCL Free Agent Pool after being traded from the AL to the NL. Rather than waiting until the following Sunday to bid on those players, we'll have a special free agent auction on Friday the 1st. Some notes on IFAB Day procedings:
  • The process for bidding on players on IFAB Day will be the same as it is on Sundays.
  • Bids must be submitted by 3:00 PM Central time (3 hours after the CFCL trade deadline)
  • All players in the CFCL free agent pool are eligible for bidding on IFAB Day, not just those who recently came over from the AL.
  • Things will be kind of tricky, since Friday is also a regular transaction day (for active/reserve moves). The lineups on August 1 lock at 12:50 PM Central, so any IFAB Day acquisitions will go into effect on Saturday the 2nd. As with usual free agent acquisitions, you will be able to adjust your roster for any acquisitions on Saturday.
  • We will then have the usual Sunday free agent bidding on August 3.

So here are how things are shaping up for the weekend at the end of this month (all times Central):

July 31 - MLB Trading Deadline
August 1 (Noon) - CFCL Trading Deadline
August 1 (12:50 PM) - CFCL Lineups Lock for Friday Roster Changes
August 1 (3:00 PM) - IFAB Day Bids Due
August 2 (11:35 AM) - CFCL Lineups Lock for IFAB Day Roster Changes
August 3 (3:00 PM) - Sunday Free Agent Bids Due

Stones and Kenndoza Combine on 16-Player Blockbuster

Johan Santana wasn't around long enough to be fitted for his Kenndoza Line uniform, as the Line sent him to Steve's Stones as part of an 8-for-8 trade.

Along with Santana (.48-10+), the Stones received catcher Russell Martin (.10-08), first baseman Albert Pujols (.41-10), second baseman Kaz Matsui (.01-08), outfielder Randy Winn (.24-10+), and pitchers Jorge Campillo (.06-10+), Luis Ayala (.02-10+), and David Riske (.02-10+).

Going from the Stones to Kenndoza are outfielder Matt Kemp (.05-09+), infielder Geoff Blum (.10-10+), catcher(?) Mike Rebelo (.01-10+), pitchers Tim Lincecum (.10-09+), Yovani Gallardo (.10-09x), and prospects Ian Stewart (.05-10x), Alcides Escobar (.02-Mx), and Pedro Alvarez (.05-Mx).

YES!

Addendum to previous All-Star Game post:

He gone! Carlos (NL) whiffs Carlos (AL) to send it to the 14th.

All-Star Grumblings

As I sit here watching a very entertaining All-Star contest carry into the 13th inning, I wonder (once again):
  • Why can't we start these games at a reasonable time? The Hall of Famer opening was nice, but by the time it was done, it was damn near 8:00 Central. My kids were enjoying the heck out of the game, but I had to send the two youngest to bed before we ever reached the 9th. I know it's an event and all, but they've got an early call for day camp in the AM, and 10:00 was our cutoff. It's a shame they had to miss all this.
  • If it's so important that guys like Kazmir and Webb not get in the game, and if using Marmol is such a scary proposition, why are they on the team? If a guy is starts the Sunday before the AS game, give him an "honorary" slot and put a usable pitcher on the roster.
  • After the last time we had an extra inning tie, a big deal was made about making the game mean something by giving home field advantage to the AS winner. I've never understood how that action was supposed to prevent ties, but now that we're possibly in the situation again, who gets home field advantage if we do, in fact, end in a tie?

At least Dennis Cook may have (hopefully) saved us from the "Uggla Loss for the NL" headlines.

Go Nationals!

Red Hots and Kenndoza Combine on 2-Player Blockbuster

THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout! With just over two weeks left until the trading deadline, Kenndoza Line and Mo's Red Hots have teamed up on a good old fashioned blockbuster, trading one of the league's top pitchers for one of the league's best hitters.

In the deal, the Red Hots send starting pitcher Johan Santana (.48-10+) to Kenndoza for second baseman Chase Utley (.53-10+).

The Red Hots have been surging in the standings lately, and find themselves only 14 points out of first. The trade comes on the heels of their stunning .55 acquisition of CC Sabathia, a pitcher who can step into Santana's shoes, and allows the Hots' to significantly upgrade their hitting without impacting their starting rotation.

Time will tell whether Kenndoza acquired Santana as an expensive but solid keeper for 2009, or whether they'll flip him to one of the losers in the Sabathia sweepstakes for a set of cheaper keepers.

Regardless, it's refreshingly rare to see a deal so evenly-balanced talent-wise this late in the season.

For their associated moves, the Red Hots reserved Cesar Izturis and activated Sabathia, while Kenndoza reserved Shawn Hill and activate Angel Berroa.

Revenge Add Spare Parts in Deal with Clowns

Morkertzuma's Revenge, fighting for a championship in their first CFCL season, have picked up a couple veteran role players who can fill in down the stretch.

In a deal completed yesterday, the Revenge sent pitching prospect Brett Sinkbeil (.02-Mx) to the Candy Colored Clowns for outfielder Luis Gonzalez (.05-10+) and infielder Rich Aurelia (.01-08).

The Revenge released Jason Perry and the Clowns activated Blake DeWitt in their associated moves.

Salary Cap Increase

Tomorrow is All Star Game Tuesday, which means 1) we're in the middle of a period during which no meaningful baseball will be played, and 2) the CFCL in-season salary cap increases to $3.50. It will stay at that level until September 1, when it nudges up to 3.60 for the final month or so of the season.

Some clarification on what the salary increase means ... or more specifically, what it doesn't mean.

It does not mean that you can make roster moves on Tuesday in order to take advantage of the increased salary room - Tuesday is not a transaction day.

Nor does it mean that you were able to make roster moves on Monday (our usual transaction day) that put you over the $3.00 cap with the anticipation that your roster would become legal when the cap increases on Tuesday.

Although the cap technically increases on Tuesday, the earliest you can make roster moves to take advantage of it is on Friday (aside from a trade, which can be effective any day).

For clarification, please refer to the Constitution: "The fact that the salary cap may increase in the middle of a transaction period does not imply that mid-week roster moves are permitted in order to take advantage of the higher cap."

FAAB Update

With big (in a couple senses of the word) free agents like CC Sabathia and Rich Harden hitting the market this weekend -- and more possible in the next couple weeks -- now is a good time to do a little refresher on some of the rules and elements surrounding FAAB processing.

Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB) Balances
Wondering how much you've got left in your FAAB? The official balances are included on the Excel roster sheet that is available both from a link in the sidebar to the right and in the Download Center.

Your outstanding balance is listed up near the top of your roster where your name, e-mail, and phone are listed. Note that if you hover your cursor over your FAAB amount, a pop-up will display listing the free agents you've acquired so far and their salaries.

If you think there may be a discrepancy in your balance, let me know. All this is updated manually - often late at night - so there's always the chance my math may be off.

Consequences of High Bids
This is just a reminder that if you acquire a free agent with a bid of .25 or higher, he'll receive a guaranteed contract for next year. This means you'll have to keep him at that salary on the following Roster Freeze Day or pay a buyout fee (assuming he is still in the National League). The amount of the buyout fee is half of the player's salary, and this amount is deducted from your Draft Day spending limit. For example, if I had cut Mark Teixeira and his .42 salary prior to this year's draft I would have had only $2.39 (2.60-.21) to spend on Draft Day.

This obligation is entirely transferrable, so if you trade a .25+ free agent, the team acquiring him will have the same obligations/restrictions next Draft Day.

IFAB Day
Interleague Free Agent Bidding Day is coming up in a few weeks. We'll get into more detail on the event as the day approaches, but essentially it is a special non-Sunday free agent bidding day to handle all the free agents who came over from the American League between the usual Free Agent Sunday (July 27) and the Major League interleague trade deadline (Thursday July 31).

IFAB Day will be Friday August 1, with bids due by 3:00 PM Central time. All players listed on the Sportsline free agent listing are available for bidding on IFAB day, including those that were traded to the NL on the previous day.

Constitution
There is additional detail on all this stuff in the Constitution. Speaking of which, now is a good time to remind everyone that the what's in the Constitution and how the Executive Committee interprets it supercedes what I post here in the blog or elsewhere (unless those posts specifically state an exception is being made to the Constitution). Just on the off chance that I accidentally misrepresent a rule while posting on the fly here. It's everyone's responsibility to know what is in the Constitution.

Ruffins Acquire Rollins

Hot on the heels of their trade with Dem Rebels a day earlier, David's Copperfields continued their dealing ways, completing a 10-player trade with David's Ruffins.

In this latest move, the Copperfields dealt outfielder Mike Cameron (.18-10+), shortstop Jimmy Rollins (.38-09+), reliever JC Romero (.02-10+), shortstop Omar Vizquel (.01-10+), and rehabbing pitcher Matt Clement (.02-10+) to the Ruffins.

In return, the Ruffins gave up outfielder Chris Young (.10-09+), shortstop Emmanuel Burris (.02-10+), reliever Tony Pena (.01-09+), second baseman Travis Denker (.08-10+), and prospect Michael Burgess (.05-Mx).

Dem Rebels Acquire Teixeira, Others

David's Copperfields became the latest team to get an early start on their 2009 keeper list, dealing 5 veterans to Dem Rebels for a package of young talent.

The Coppers sent first baseman Mark Teixeira (.42-09+), outfielders Brian Giles (.23-10+) and Jeremy Hermida (.10-08), second baseman Ray Durham (.09-10+), and pitcher Ted Lilly (.15-09+) to the Rebels.

In exchange, the Rebels gave up first baseman Prince Fielder (.07-X), outfielder Hunter Pence (.05-09+), pitchers Andrew Miller (.02-10+) and Logan Kensing (.05-10+), and second base prospect Eugenio Velez (.08-10+).

The deal put the Rebels in instant salary cap jeopardy, forcing them to place new acquisitions Giles and Lilly on the Reserve List until the cap expands or they can shuffle their roster further.

OOF on the Move

I've been meaning to post this news tidbit, but never seemed to get around to it.

Several weeks ago our Officer of FAAB, Eric, informed me that he and his wife will be picking up and moving to Memphis in the very new future. The move is a result of a new career opportunity for Eric (he'll be managing a large group of school therapists). As I recall, though they'll be living in the Memphis area, the job is actually across the state line in Mississippi.

The CFCL Front Office wishes to officially extend our congratulations and wishes of good luck to the Lamb clan in in their new adventure?

What does this mean in terms of Eric's ability to fulfill his role in the FAAB process? In the long run, it shouldn't affect it. Since we work mainly by e-mail, Eric doesn't forsee a problem with continuing to forward the bids to me each Sunday once he gets settled.

There will be a slight hiccuup in the process during the time that Eric is moving and getting his new life organized, but we've come up with a process to keep the FAAB flowing with minimal disruption.

While Eric is out of touch, we've identified his former Assistant GM, Paul, to act as BOOF (Backup Officer of FAAB). From a bid submission stand-point, things will work exactly the same. We'll still submit our Sunday bids to the cfcl_faab@live.com address (note the underscore between cfcl and faab).

The process of getting the bids to me after the Sunday deadline may vary a bit while Paul is in place, however. I don't think this will be a big deal, but I at least wanted to let everyone know what would be happening...

Given Paul's situation (he's a quadriplegic, for those who don't know him), he's not always able to get to the computer on a predicatble schedule - though he is online quite a bit. So rather than tying him down to a committment every Sunday afternoon, here's how we'll work it:
  1. After the 3:00 PM Sunday deadline passes, I will call Paul and he'll give me the password for the FAAB e-mail account.
  2. I'll sign into the account and get the bids, then process them as I usually do.
  3. Sometime the following week (as early as possible, but when it's convenient for him), Paul will sign on to the FAAB e-mail account and change the password, thereby locking me out for the next week.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 as needed until Eric can resume his duties.

As I said, from the standpoint of submitting bids, this should be totally invisible to us as owners. In fact, it may even speed things up -- while Paul may not always get online every Sunday, I will nearly always be able to get ahold of him via phone at 3:01 Sunday afternoon, so I should be able to get in and process bids right away rather than waiting for the e-mails from Eric (which, as you might have noticed, got later and later as his move prep increased).

Hopefully this workaround is OK with everyone, and once again, many thanks and best of luck to Eric!

Stones Reacquire Stetter

Steve's Stones reacquired reliever Mitch Stetter from Moore Better. The Stones had originally dealt Stetter to the Better about three weeks ago as part of an eight-player deal.

To ransom Stetter, the Stones sent first base prospect Joe Koshansky to Moore Better.

The Stones made room for Stetter on their active roster by reserving Dan Uggla.

Yoo Hoo to Arms!

In this week's Monroe Doctrine, Rich writes about some of the minutia in the CFCL Consitution. He even mentions something that's missing from our rules - the Rotisserie League's Yoo Hoo Ceremony.

He writes about the Doctrine's namesake, Bob Monroe's, experience undergoing the ritual at the hands of his son Ryan:

Bob Monroe was out of town at the end of the season in which he won the title. So he had his kids dump a bottle of Yoo-Hoo on him while his wife took photographic evidence for the league.
Here, for your enjoyment, is that photographic evidence:

Ok... I realize there may be some cleansing of the pallate needed after viewing the above, so here's a link to something to take your mind off of it: an excerpt from the original Rotisserie League Baseball book: A Yoo-Hoo to Arms

Hmmm. These reminiscences have me a bit nostalgic. Now that it's pretty darn clear that the Copperfields have no chance at the 2008 title, maybe it's time we reinstate the Yoo Hoo ceremony...

Trot Nixon
.05 DoorMatts (release Adrian Cardenas)

.07 Kenndoza Line (release Brian Bixler)
.05 DoorMatts (Omar Quintanilla.
.05 Graging Bulls (Cole Rohrbough)

You Decide: Real or Fake?

Incredible catch by the Fresno Grizzlies ballgirl, or incredible editing job??

DoorMatts trade Brandon Webb to Ruffins

This trade announcement is brought to you by 7-Up, the Un-Cola. 7-Up - now that's refreshing.

In a refreshing change of pace, two CFCL veterans combined on a deal today in which a contending team sent significant major league talent to their trading partner rather than a package weighted heavily toward prospects and potential as had been the trend so far this year.

Today, David's Ruffins acquired pitcher Brandon Webb (.21-08), first baseman Dmitri Young (.04-09+), and a 2nd round Draft Pick in 2009 from the DoorMatts. In return, the Ruffins gave up first baseman Joey Votto (.10-09+), reliever Chad Qualls (.01-10+), plus prospects Gerardo Parra (.05-Mx) and Thomas Hanson (.02-Mx).

Whether this value-for-value approach will work against the Ruffins, since cometeitors have gotten more in exchange for less in terms of current-season production, or if it will re-establish the trend where non-contenders demand major league talent in trades, only time will tell...

Clowns Pitch In to Bulls' Title Hopes

The Candy Colored Clowns restocked the Graging Bulls' pitching staff with four fresh arms today, completing a seven-player deal.

Joining the Bulls will be starters Calros Zambrano (.22-10+) and Randy Johnson (.06-10+), relievers Takashi Saito (.21-09+) and Fransisco Cordero (.24-08), plus their 8th round Rotation Draft pick in 2009.

In exchange, the Clowns received third baseman Mark Reynolds (.09-09+), pitcher Clayton Kershaw (.05-10+), and prospect Fernando Martinez (.05-Mx).

SPECIAL NOTE: Roster Correction

When I enter the rosters at the stat service after each Draft Day, there are typically 15 or so minor leaguers who were selected by CFCL teams in the Rotation Draft by who are not yet in Sportsline's player data base.

In order for these guys to show up on rosters at Sportsline, I've got to type them in manually as placeholders. Unfortunately, there's no notification when they're eventually added to the data base by Sportsline.

One such player this year was the Ruffins' Thomas Hanson. I had listed him on the Ruffins roster (as Tommy Hansen), but he eventually was added to the Sportsline where he showed up as a free agent. The DoorMatts noticed him, and acquired him via FAAB on May 12.

Dave Holian just noticed Hanson on the DoorMatts roster, and called the error to my attention. Luckily, since Hanson was never called up to the majors, or the the DoorMatts' active roster, this one's fairly easy to straighten out.

Hanson will be removed from the DoorMatts' roster and placed on the Ruffins. In addition, Matt Herges will be reinstated to the DoorMatt's reserve list (that's who they'd released when they "acquired" Hanson), along with the .06 in FAAB they spent on him.

I apologize to everyone, especially the Ruffins and DoorMatts for the error. Thankfully Hanson never accrued stats for the DoorMatts - that would have been rather hairy indeed (though we probably would have noticed earlier).

Speaking of noticing - I publish the full FAAB results each week. Be sure to check these postings out and if you see a familiar name going to another team, speak up. Now that we can acquire minor leaguers via FAAB, I don't recognize a quarter of the names being bid on. As long as he's listed in the Sportsline pool as a free agent, he's OK by me.

Trade Reporting Rules

When Tim and Mike e-mailed me about their trade this past weekend, they said they weren't sure about the proper procedure for reporting a trade. They actually did a fine job of it, but since we've had some changes to our transaction reporting procedures for this season, I thought it would be a good idea to go over the process for trades (it's that time of year...).

After you and another owner agree to a deal, here's what the two of you should do to make things official:

  1. You should both report it to the League Secretary (David M.) via e-mail.
  2. Your e-mail should contain the details of the trade, as well as specific moves you will make in order to ensure your roster is complete and legal following the deal. This might involve:
    • Releasing players to get your down to 40 players if you acquired more guys than you gave up
    • Activating and/or reserving players in order to meet the positional requirements
Until all parties involved in the deal send me an e-mail that meets the above requirements, the trade will not be considered official - even if the deadline passes, pushing the effective date for the trade back a day.

Once the necessary e-mails have been received, I'll enter all the transactions (the trade and the associated moves) at the Sportsline site. This will help ensure that the trade meets all the requirements - if I can't get legal and valid active rosters based on the e-mails I was sent, the trade will not go through.

Other things to keep in mind about trades and associated moves:
  • Owners cannot propose/accept trades themselves at the Sportsline site. We have some special requirements and restrictions involving trades that Sportsline is not able to monitor, so we require all trades are reported via e-mail to ensure we can do a validity check before the stat site is updated.
  • When you acquire players in a trade that will put you over the salary cap, you CANNOT make associated moves in order to get your active roster under the cap. You'll have to reserve the expensive player(s) for the time being, then activate them at the next regular Monday or Friday transaction date.
  • You cannot make a trade that will leave you unable to fill an active roster position. If you have a guy on your Reserve List that you can activate as an associated move, that's fine. But you cannot leave an open spot after a deal figuring you'll pick up a free agent to fill the roster spot later - even if you make the trade on a Sunday. You have to have the replacement available on your roster prior to making the deal.

For more explaination or additional details on the rules on trades and reporting them, refer to Article XIII. of the Constitution.

How Addicted Are (Were) You?

A multiple choice fantasy sports quiz to evaluate how obssessed you are with this pastime:

I found I needed to adapt some of the questions here and there, since I'm not one of those oddballs that partakes of non-baseball fantasy sports, but it wasn't too tough to adjust.

Also, a few questions in I realized I was thinking "I'm a 'B' now, but a few years ago I would have said 'D'." I guess I've got to face it - I'm no longer the RotoNut I was in my heyday (1990-2000, probably). I still love the game, but real life has invaded to the point that I can no longer devote the time and effort to it that I once did (and, boy, does it show). I imagine others among us are in the same boat.

Anyway, I ended up choosing two answers to each question - one reflecting my current state, and one based on how I remember myself behaving 10-15 years ago.

Out of a possible 40 points, my scores were:
2008 me: 24 points
1990s me: 34 points

Sounds about right...

Some Nice Things You May Have Missed:

Period 10

We're coming to the end of 2008's 10th reporting period, which is a significant milepost in the CFCL season.

The standings in Period 10 are what we use as the benchmark for the Dallas Green Award, which goes to the CFCL team that gains the most points from Period 10 until the end of the season.

The award is named for the architect of the Cubs' near-championship season in 1984, which was due in a large part to in-season acquisitions of players like Rick Suttcliffe and Dennis Eckersley.

The goal of the award is to recognize the CFCL GM who does the best job of improving their team during the season. We chose Period 10's standings as the starting point because it eliminated much of the flukiness of early-season standings, but also left enough of the season for GMs to have an impact on their team's fortunes.

A look at the Dallas Green Award winners from seasons past should be very encouraging to nearly all of the current CFCL GMs. Since the turn of the century, Dallas Green Award winners have averaged a gain of over 22 points from Period 10 until the end of the year.

And in the past two year, the Dallas Green winners have gained 25.5 and 30.5 points respectively. A look at the live standings while I'm writing this, shows the gap between the first place Revenge and the 11th place Copperfields to be 29.5 points, indicating that a Copperfield championship in 2008 is still within the realm of possibility - or certainly at least a money finish.

In other words at this point in the season, really only one team has fallen out of the race.

Gaining twenty-some points in the final 16 weeks is one thing, but can a team really come from 25-30 points behind to actually win?

Ask the Ruffins, who won the Dallas Green Award (+30.5 points) and the CFCL Championship in 2006. Or ask Kenndoza Line, who won the Dallas Green Award (+25.5 points) and the CFCL Championship in 2007. Can it happen again?

Food for thought...

Revenge - Moore Better Trade

Morkertzuma's Revenge took steps today to solidfy their position atop the CFCL standings, making two strong additions to their offense in a deal with the 12th place Moore Better.

The Revenge acquired first baseman Todd Helton (.27-09+) and outfielder Andre Ethier (.17-10+) for infielder Jose Castillo (.01-10+), outfielder Gabe Kapler (.05-10+), pitcher Sean Gallagher (.02-10+), and third base prospect Andy LaRoche (.05-09+).

The acquisitions were a key strategic move for the Revenge -- although they rank 4th in the league in offense overall, they find themselves dead last in On-Base Percentage at .327. Helton's OBP of .417 and Ethier's .359 are sure to help that cause.

Up With Fans!

The Supreme Court has ended (hopefully for good) the battle of MLB vs Fantasy Baseball by refusing to hear their appeal of a lower court's ruling that stat services were free to use player names and stats without a license, as it were.

The legal fight began a number of years ago when the then-parent company of Total Quality Stats (CDM) took MLB to court when they were refused the right to use stats.

Details and opinion can be found in this editorial:

http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/editorials/articles/2008/06/03/in_this_fantasy_fans_come_first/

Pro sports should worry more about alienating core fans than about unlicensed fantasy leagues. From foamy fingers to fantasy leagues, fans have invented elaborate new ways to show their devotion over the years. Pro leagues benefit handsomely, even if indirectly, when these innovations flourish.
