2018 Wrap Up

The Sombreros succeeded in defending their crown and the Ruffins and Revenge secured the other money spots.  At  least the first two places were forgone conclusions back in May, but we had drama up to the last (plus one) day of the season.

Going into Game(s) 163 the Swing/Rebels were fighting for last and the Line/Clown rivalry was heated and in question who would top whom.  AND it turns out the Beatniks needed game 163 (Buehler?) to reach the Bald Eagle Inning Requirement.  At the end of Sundays games the Beatniks had 999.3 IP.  NOT the requisite 1000.  So for about 24 hours the Rebels were actually in 9th place with the Beatniks having lost all points in WHIP, ERA and K/BB.  But then Monday happened, Walker Buehler pitched 6.7 innings and the Tartan Clad Ones once again dashed the hopes and dreams of our Flannel Heros.

Quintana, thanks to Maddon's early hook, couldn't provide enough WHiP action for the Rebels to pass The Swing and despite losing a point in the standings, the Line were about to outdistance the Clowns.  Quite a productive and interesting season plus one day.

If any local owner would like to coordinate a playoff viewing party, feel free.  I suspect after tomorrow any viewing will be done without involving the Cubs, but it may allow for a year end recap.

We do have some business to attend to and information to provide, so let's get to it.

1)  At your earliest convenience, please let me know if you'll be returning for 2019.  A solid answer would be preferred by late November/early December.

2)  If you are returning, we need to draft in 2019.  The season starts with the Angels and Mariners in Japan in January, I think, but the NL opens for business on Thursday, March 28th.  So our default options are the weekend before (Saturday the 23rd) or the weekend after (Saturday the 30th).  Our preferred method has always been before the season starts, but we do have to make sure our out of town owners can make it happen on that weekend.  We don't have to decide immediately, but give it some thought, check your calendars and get back to me.

3)  Winter Waivers.  3pm January 6th you need to submit your list of 23 keepers (and those players you are waiving).  Just a reminder but any players you had on expiring contracts or S contracts are officially off your team right now so there's no need to waive or cut them.

4)  Speaking of expired contracts, a few teams have Home Town Discounts for the 2019 draft.

IFAB Day

Tomorrow is IFAB Day.  Mike will be sending out an e-mail later with some specifics, but here's the reminder.

By 3pm tomorrow you can log on to OnRoto and place bids on ANY player in the Free Agent Pool, not just the one's that were traded over from the American League.  If you're trying to do your research tonight you may be frustrated.  The new NL players (Archer et. al) won't be in the pool until tomorrow after the system updates over night.

Two reminders, you can bid whatever you have left of your FAAB, there is no additional money for IFAB Day.  And just like every other free agent bid day, any player purchased for .25 or higher must be kept going into next year's draft or face a 50% penalty of their salary.  Unless they are back in the AL, retired or dead by Roster Freeze Day.

Questions?  The Constitution is a great resource and you're always welcome to e-mail me.

Happy Shopping!

CFCL Trade deadline

Just a quick reminder that the CFCL trade deadline is tomorrow (August 1st) at noon Central time.

In order for a trade to be official, BOTH teams must report the trade to the Commissioner along with associated moves that will keep their rosters in compliance.  If you want to cc: Mike Coulter (OnRoto Guru) to expedite matters with roster movement, that's fine.  But the trade must be reported by both teams to the Commissioner to be official.

Things may be busy tomorrow with multiple trades not to mention work and other life commitments so there most likely won't be time to chase down owners to get them to report their moves or confirm a trade.  Make sure you cover all your bases so that the trade you want to happen actually takes place.

Good luck for the second half of the season!

Ruffins/Line Trade

Continue to make efforts to have a pennant race the Ruffins pulled off another deal.  In what may be a CFCL record, this deal was negotiated over a nine hour time difference.  While sipping an afternoon coffee at an outdoor cafe in Italy, the Kenndoza Line would awake at 6am in California to respond to the latest Ruffin proposal.  Here's what they agreed to.

The Ruffins trade Victor Robles (.10 Mx), Pedro Strop (.01 20+), Kolby Allard (.05 Mx), Scooter Gennett (.10 19+) and Anthony DiSclafani (.05 20+) to the Line for Clayton Kershaw (.51 20+), Jedd Gyorko (.01 18), Odubel Herrera (.16 20+), Bud Norris (.05 19+) and Preston Tucker (.05 20+).

Roster Freeze and Draft Day Information

Here is the information for Draft Day 2018 and Roster Freeze Day.  Please make sure to read its entirety as this year is different than others.

DRAFT DAY

Thanks to Easter we, as a league, decided to move Draft Day to the weekend prior to Opening Day.  Draft Day is Saturday, March 24th.  The draft will begin at 12:30.  Any owner is welcome to arrive early (actually it's encouraged so we can dispense with the administrative issues and hit the ground running with the Ruffin Privilege at 12:30).  I should be at the office around 11:30 if not sooner, printing out sheets and organizing the room so anytime after 11:30 is fine to arrive.

Location - We have a NEW DRAFT LOCATION as my business office moved in December.  We will be drafting at 387 Shuman Blvd, Naperville.  There are three conference or training rooms to choose from, I will figure out which one fits our needs best, but two of them are MUCH larger than the room we have been in for years.

Basically the office is at the corner of Mill and Shuman (just south of I-88 and north of Diehl Road.  The main entrance is at the "back" of the building which faces the parking lot, not the street.  Call or text me with any directional questions.

Amenities - I do not believe there is public Wi-Fi in the building.  So plan accordingly.  As always, if you are using the internet that's fine but we WILL NOT delay a bid while an owner is waiting for a page to refresh or trying to download information.  There also is not a public fridge or microwave.  Any food you bring will need to be ok in room temperature or you'll need to bring a cooler.  Please bring an extension cord if you plan on using a computer.  The rooms should have plenty of outlets, but as I said, the rooms are larger so we may not be sitting right next to a plug.

All the normal Draft Day things apply.  Come prepared.  Pay attention to the player and bid so we can move in a timely manner.  You're certainly allowed to take time to consider a bid, but we don't want owners taking "too much time".  We've all been in the league long enough to know what that means.

After the draft if you are available and want to, we can head out to a local establishment to relive the draft or catch up with each other.  There are a ton of places to choose from in the area, we can figure out specifics the day of.

Entrance fee is $120.  Check or cash is fine.  Just bring payment.  I don't want to have to chase anyone down during the season for payment.

ROSTER FREEZE DAY

Since we are drafting a week before Opening Day we have challenges with our rosters.  The Executive Committee has discussed the matter and has decided that Roster Freeze Day will be Wednesday, March 21st at 3pm.

Yes, that gives you two full days to plan your draft knowing the other teams' cuts instead of the traditional week.  However, this gives you an additional three days to make roster decisions based on what's happening in the National League training camps.

Those teams with minor leaguers will  need to be extra vigilant in your decisions.  If you place an Mx player on your active roster and that player ultimately gets sent to the minors PRIOR to Opening Day, you can reserve that player to retain his Mx status - or you can leave him on your active roster when the season starts and his contract status will change accordingly.

If you place a minor leaguer (who is still in major league camp) on your reserve list and he starts the season on the Opening Day Roster, you will not be allowed to activate that player until July 1st.

This is all pretty standard stuff, however given that Roster Freeze Day is a week and half prior to Opening Day I fully expect NL rosters will still be in a state of flux.

Here is where things can get interesting.  Currently we have a number of CFCL teams with players on their roster who are free agents.  Here is how this will be handled.

Option 1) - You can release the player when you submit your cuts.

Option 2)  - You can keep the free agent player when you submit your cuts.  The player has to be placed on your Reserve List.  His salary counts against your cap and he counts against your 15 keepers.

2a)  If your kept free agent is signed by an American League team prior to Roster Freeze Day (3pm March 21st) the player is automatically released.  His salary is restored to your cap but you will not be able to pull someone back from your cut list to replace the free agent on your roster.

2b)  If your kept free agent is signed by an American League AFTER Roster Freeze Day (3pm March 21st) the player is on your team for the year (unless you release him during the season) and his stats count whenever you have him on your Active Roster.

Once your cuts are submitted your roster is frozen.  You may not move players from Active to Reserve unless a player on your Active roster has been put on the DL or sent to the minors.  You  may not under any circumstances move a player from the Reserve list to the Active Roster.

Any questions, please direct them to me.

Draft Day 2018

I thought I had posted something along these lines earlier, but apparently not.  So here is the official word on Draft Day 2018.

After polling the league regarding drafting on Easter weekend or the weekend before, everyone said they could be available the weekend prior to Easter but a few had potential conflicts the weekend of Easter.

So, Draft Day 2018 will be Saturday, March 24th, 2018.  Let's plan on starting at 10am so anyone needing to leave town that evening can get a normal start.  That means league business, passing out papers, dealing with last minute NL roster adjustments and league photo will take place at 10am with the Ruffin Privilege taking place shortly thereafter.

You are welcome to arrive earlier - I'll probably be there around 9am.

Now, the location.  That has changed.  The new office (and drafting location) address is:

387 Shuman Blvd
Suite 325 W
Naperville  IL  60563

It's just a mile or two west of where the old office was located, essentially at the corner of Mill Street and I-88, just north of Diehl Road.  I'm sure Google Maps can get you there, but if you have any questions, let me know.

We have three larger conference/meeting rooms to utilize, so over the next few months I'll figure out which one is best suited for our needs and I can let you know about amenities (snack machine, fridge, microwave, etc.)

This is the first of probably a couple reminders/requests regarding rosters.  Keep in mind that when you are formulating your Roster Cuts for Roster Freeze Day, ALL players are on your active roster unless documented evidence shows they are not required to be there (assigned to the DL, demoted to the minors).  Drafting a week before the season starts will create some challenges, but keep in mind all ten teams face these challenges and no team is above any other in not having to make the tough decisions.  It may not be perfect, but until some major league team hires you/us to perform Epstein and Hoyer's jobs, it's what we have.

Winter Waivers - 2018

Below are the players who were cut and are thus available for claim during Winter Waivers.  Keep in mind a couple of things.

1)  Claim Deadline for Round 1 is 3pm, Thursday January 11th.
2)  When you submit a claim:
2a) The order in which you submit your claim will be the order in which you are eligible for the claim (claims occur in reverse order of the 2017 standings)
2b)  For every player you claim you MUST submit a player from your current roster to waive.  This includes claims submitted after the Trade Freeze is lifted.  Which leads to:
3)  The Trade Freeze is over and trading may occur at 3:01pm, Thursday, January 11th.  If you complete a trade that leaves your roster with 21 players, you still must submit a player to waive for every player you claim (See 2b above).
4)  Any player not claimed in Round 1 is ineligible to be acquired later in Winter Waivers and enters the Free Agent Pool for Draft Day 2018 (Details on Draft Day 2018 to be coming in a separate post).
5)  Any player claimed during Winter Waivers will retain the salary listed next to his name and have a contract of W which will convert to 20+ should that player be kept through Roster Freeze Day.
6)  Any questions regarding the process of Winter Waivers, please direct them to me or read the Constitution.

Without further ado, here are your Winter Prospects:

Tyler Moore .05
Matt Szczur  .05
Jeff Mathis .05
Brett Eibner  .05
Daniel Nava .05
